A LOOK AT
SAGADAHOC COUNTY
|
Sagadahoc County is located in the midcoast region of
Maine. It is made up of ten communities totaling 250
square miles, with a population of 33,525. The County is
home to Maine's largest employer, Bath Iron Works, Inc.
and a close neighbor to the Brunswick Naval Air Station
and nationally known Bowdoin College. It is a popular
area for tourists, offering phenomenal coastline, a rich
maritime heritage, quaint towns, antique shops and more.
Sagadahoc became a county in 1854 and was originally
part of Lincoln County. The name Sagadahoc is said to
come from the Sasanoa Indian Tribe and means mouth of big
river. The big river refers to the Kennebec River. The
Courthouse was built in 1869. In 1985 it was renovated
and a three story addition was added. This same
courthouse is home for the Sheriff's Department.
Bath,
Topsham, and
Richmond maintain full time police
departments. The rest of the county is served by the
Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff's
Department has 28 full time employees and is augmented by
a part time staff of 17.
