Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Department is firmly committed to Community Policing. Law enforcement leaders have long known that they need active participation of key community leaders and community members to be successful at reducing crime, substance abuse, delinquency and violence. In the fall of 1994, Sheriff Mark Westrum and other area chiefs agreed to be the first pilot test for a multijurisdictional implementational model for rural neighborhood policing. Beginning in January of 1995 officers began working with community partners to bring about the first community justice project, the Midcoast CJP. Community Advisory Boards were formed and work with law enforcement on a variety of issues that face a community. Officers and residents work together proactively to prevent crime and bring about change in their respective towns. To date Sagadahoc County Sheriff's Department has four towns involved in it's Community Policing endeavor, with more towns scheduled to be organized soon. If you would like to become involved or have any questions, please contact the Sheriff's Department or E-mail us at [email protected].
